What Oak Hill is built from
Another of the small cities that kept its own government through consolidation, lying south of the city between Franklin Pike and Granny White Pike, and home to the Tennessee Governor's Mansion. Mid-century and later houses on wooded acreage, generously sized, with long roofs, deep eaves and a great deal of mature tree cover overhead.
Settled, private and quiet. Rooms are large, furniture is heavy, and rugs tend to stay exactly where they were first laid down.
The Oak Hill problem
Storms are the recurring problem in Oak Hill, and not the dramatic kind. Middle Tennessee runs a long severe-weather season through March, April and May, and on these lots the mature canopy overhead means a hard line of storms leaves limbs on roofs, blocked valleys and gutters, and a lifted shingle or two that nobody goes up to look at. Water then enters slowly at a corner or along an exterior wall and finds the rug before it finds the ceiling, so the first sign is a rug that smells before anything on the plaster shows. The other half is the power cut. When a spring storm takes the line down for two or three days in warm weather the air handling stops, and a large closed house with no dehumidification in a Tennessee May reaches a humidity that a wool foundation cannot recover from on its own. Both versions are quiet, and both are well established by the time anyone calls about them.
